Saul and Barnabas, accompanied by John Mark, leave Antioch on their first missionary journey of paramount importance to the world. Among the first destinations is the island of Cyprus, where Saul was hated and feared by those who remembered him as the Roman persecutor. While in Paphos Saul confronts the evil sorcerer Elymas, who tries to prevent him from converting Sergius Paulus, Roman Pro-Consul, to the faith. Elymas is miraculously punished for his blasphemy. During this first of three missionary journeys, Saul, having severed the last ties to his past, becomes Paul, Evangelist and Apostle for Christ.
