Veteran actress Jeanette Nolan portrays Dorothea Lynde Dix (1802-1887), a 19th century social reformer and powerful advocate in the U.S. for building hospitals for the mentally ill. She challenged the myth that people with mental illness could not be cured or helped and fought relentlessly to foster laws that would prohibit cruel and ruthless practices, such as caging, incarceration with no warmth, proper food or clothing, and painful physical restraint.
